![]() Wild beast spectacles and gladiatorial combat had different origins and developed in different ways. Spectacles were a part of Roman life before the amphitheatre was invented. It had symbolic, religious and political significance which went far beyond mere entertainment, important though this was. Despite Hollywood portrayals, the Roman amphitheatre was far more than a blood-drenched killing ground.
